The best time to visit Uganda
Uganda's dry and rainy seasons explained, plus the best months for gorilla trekking, safaris, birding and city trips.
Updated 24 October 2026

Uganda sits on the equator, so it is warm all year. Most days are between 20°C and 30°C, and evenings in the highlands around Kabale and Bwindi can be cool.
The dry seasons (most popular)
- June to August/September — the longest dry season and the busiest time for gorilla trekking and safaris.
- December to February — shorter dry season, green landscapes and great wildlife viewing.
Forest trails are easier, roads are in better shape and animals gather near water. Book permits and lodges early for these months.
The rainy seasons
- March to May — the long rains.
- October to November — the short rains.
Rain usually comes in heavy afternoon showers rather than all day. Lodges are quieter, some offer lower rates, and the country is at its greenest. Pack waterproof boots and a rain jacket for trekking.
Best time for…
- Gorilla and chimpanzee trekking: June–September and December–February.
- Safaris in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls: the dry seasons, when grass is shorter.
- Birding: November to April, when migrant birds arrive.
- Kampala, Jinja and the lakes: any time of year.
