Jinja sits on the shores of Lake Victoria, about 80 km east of Kampala, at the point where the River Nile begins its long journey to the Mediterranean. It's Uganda's adventure capital and an easy weekend trip from the city.
Things to do
- Visit the Source of the Nile — international visitors pay around USD 10 to enter the gardens, then take a short boat ride to the spot where the river leaves Lake Victoria.
- White-water rafting on the Nile — half-day and full-day trips for beginners and experienced paddlers. A full day with a long-established operator costs around USD 140, usually including meals, safety gear and transport from Jinja. Gentler family floats are also available.
- Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding on calmer stretches of the river.
- Bungee jumping over the Nile.
- Quad biking, horse riding and mountain biking through villages and sugar-cane fields.
- Sunset cruises with views of birds, fishermen and riverside life.
- Wander the town centre to see its old colonial-era and Indian-style shopfronts.
