Checked October 2026. Exchange rates and fees change daily.

The currency

Uganda's currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX). Prices in shops, markets and restaurants are usually in shillings. Some hotels, lodges, tour operators and park permits are priced in US dollars. Check the latest exchange rate with your bank or a currency app before you travel.

US dollars

  • Bring clean, undamaged notes printed 2013 or later — older, marked or torn notes are routinely refused.
  • Larger notes ($50 and $100) usually get a better exchange rate than small ones.
  • Change money at banks or licensed forex bureaus, not on the street.

Cards and ATMs

  • Visa cards are widely accepted in hotels, malls and larger restaurants in Kampala and Entebbe; Mastercard is accepted in fewer places.
  • Card payments may carry an extra fee — ask first.
  • ATMs are common in cities and larger towns but rare near national parks. Withdraw cash before you head out on safari.
  • Tell your bank you are travelling to avoid your card being blocked.

Mobile money

Mobile money is used everywhere in Uganda, from market stalls to boda bodas. You can buy a local SIM card from MTN or Airtel at Entebbe airport or in town — bring your passport, as registration is mandatory. Registering for mobile money usually needs a national ID, so it's not always possible for short visits; ask at the network's shop.

Tipping

Tipping isn't required but is appreciated.

  • Restaurants: around 5–10% if service isn't included.
  • Safari guides, drivers, trackers and porters: tipping is customary. A common guide is USD 10–25 per day for your safari guide, USD 5–10 per day for drivers, and USD 5–10 for a gorilla trekking porter.
