Always check your own government's latest travel advice before you go.
Uganda is known for its warm, welcoming people, and most visits are trouble-free. Like anywhere, a little preparation goes a long way.
Everyday safety
- Keep valuables out of sight and use your hotel safe.
- Carry a copy of your passport and leave the original somewhere secure.
- Use ride-hailing apps or taxis recommended by your hotel at night.
- Be alert in crowded places such as markets and bus parks.
Health
- A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required to enter Uganda.
- Malaria is present across the country. Talk to a travel clinic about antimalarial tablets, use insect repellent and sleep under a mosquito net.
- Drink bottled or filtered water.
- Get travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, especially if you're trekking or on safari.
- See a travel clinic 6–8 weeks before your trip to check which other vaccinations and health advice apply to you.
On the road
- Avoid driving outside cities after dark.
- Always wear a helmet on boda bodas and agree the fare first.
- Use reputable bus companies and licensed tour operators.
Wildlife and parks
- Always follow your ranger's or guide's instructions.
- Never get out of your vehicle on game drives unless told it's safe.
- Keep your distance from hippos and buffaloes, especially near water.
Local customs
- Greetings matter — say hello and ask how someone is before getting to business.
- Dress modestly away from beaches, lodges and the city, especially in religious places.
- Always ask before taking photos of people.
- Same-sex relationships are illegal in Uganda. LGBTQ+ travellers should read their government's travel advice before visiting.
Emergency numbers
- Police and emergencies: 999 or 112
- Fire and rescue: 0800 121 222
- KCCA ambulance (Kampala): 0800 111 044
Also save the number for your embassy and your travel insurer before you travel.
